Euro 2012 Final: Spain vs. Italy
After last night’s match, Euro 2012 has its long awaited second finalist – Italy. Spain will face Italy on Sunday, 1st of July 2012 at the Kiev Olympic Stadium in Ukraine. Both teams met in the preliminary round in group C and the result of the match was a draw (1-1).
In semi-finals, Spain won the match against Portugal after penalty shootouts (4-2). Cesc Fàbregas became the undisputed Spanish hero of the game, as he executed the last goal against Portugal in the guard by Rui Patricio.
As for Italy, they advanced to the final round beating Germany with a score of 2 to 1. In the Italy-Germany match, striker Mario Balotelli scored two goals against Germany in the guard by Manuel Neuer.
Spain kept to their strategy throughout all the Euro 2012 events, without lowering the number of six pure strikers plus a midfielder. In terms of possession, it was much higher than all their opponents’ up to date – they kept the ball 67.5 percent of the time! It shouldn’t come as a surprise tough, as they are defending both the titles of Euro 2008 champions and the winners of World Cup 2010.
On the other side, Italy has proven that they are able to adapt to any new situation, as the coach Cesare Prandelli comes up with successful tactics. Italy mainly keeps a left-style offense and defense, which was a real challenge for Spain’s offensive players in the qualifications.
For the record, Italy hasn’t won the Euro Cup since 1968 and their victory is very much anticipated by their fans, while Spain has a chance to become the first nation to retain the European Cup trophy two times in a row. It’s safe to say, that there’s a lot at stake – pride, renown, and of course the Euro 2012 winner title. The question is, who do YOU think will be the Euro 2012 winner?
