Blackburn Rovers discovered that they won’t have it all their own way this season in the Championship as Steve Kean’s men slumped to a 2-1 defeat by Middlesbrough at Ewood Park.
Lukas Jutkiewicz grabbed a goal in each half to break Middlesbrough’s duck away from home. Rovers – unbeaten before last night – scarcely fashioned an opportunity of note in the first half, although Fabio Nunes’ cross hit the crossbar in stoppage time.
Mustapha Carayol, who had a shot cleared off the line in the opening minute of the second period, then found Jutkiewicz just after the hour mark to superbly head in Boro’s second.
In 89th minute Grant Hanley reduced the deficit of Blackburn. Soon after that, Rovers could have completed a comeback when Justin Hoyte tripped Rhodes.
So far this season for Rovers, it has been a game of second halves with eight of their 14 goals coming in the second period, however there was to be no second half rebellion on Friday night. Their performance was well below par as Middlesborough were deserving winners for the first time this season.
As for Middlesborough, they managed to end their miserable away run against the leaders of the nPower which should give them some much-needed confidence.
