As I predicted, Marin Čilić qualified to the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, defeating Fernando Verdasco in three sets. This means that I won the bet I made on the Croatian’s victory.
Even if Čilić lost the first set, he managed to concentrate very well in the next two. Finally, he scored a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory over the Spanish Fernando Verdasco. The first set proved to be a bit uncomfortable for Čilić, who wasn’t able to fructify any of his four breaking points. On the other hand, the Spanard managed to take advantage of this only opportunity to take the first set.
Here you can watch a video with the highlights of the match:
After the first set, the Croatian started to dominate the game from the back of the court, winning the second set relatively easy: 6-1. In the deciding set, which was as balanced as the first one, Čilić managed to break Verdasco’s serve. In the third set, Čilić also had two match points on Verdasco’s serve, but failed to convert them into winning points. Therefore, he was forced to serve out the match.
All in all, it seems that the world’s number 16 tennis player, Marin Čilić, achieved a nice victory over a more experienced tennis player. This victory not only led him into the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters, but also reduced the difference in the head-to-head confrontations between the two tennis players.
