Paris Saint Germain warmed up quite nicely for Barcelona, after a victory over the reigning champions Montpellier on Parc des Princes. I managed to win my bet with 5.7 units placed at Betfair on PSG’s victory.
PSG started the game in full attack mode, and had the better game of the first half, testing Montpellier’s Geoffrey Jourden several times through Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva. Montpellier didn’t budge, and made PSG work twice as hard for the win in the second half, and the only goal came on the 80th minute when Kevin Gameiro with an assist from Ibrahimovic and the help of David Beckham, who was called from the bench for a late push in the attack, scored to put PSG at a comfortable 7 points lead on the Ligue 1 Table.
PSG was also aided by other Ligue 1 results, mainly Lyon’s loss against Sochaux, but their midfielder Javier Pastore said that: “We’re focused more than ever on the challenges to come, whether it is winning the title, the Coupe de France or the Champions League.” Of course, players are trying to boost each other’s morale after such an underwhelming performance, but even though they won, they are still losing points on teams which should only help them go up on the table, like Sochaux and Saint-Etiene.
Montpellier finds itself in a relatively good form, with a really united squad, which I would say counts for almost nothing as the former champions are most likely to miss any chance with the Champions League. Even though they are not the same team who upset everyone and won the League last year, they are still one of the best in the midfield area, but they still lack the presence of a really good striker.
Result: +5.7 units, bet won
