Recap: Bayer Leverkusen – Benfica [February, 14 2013]

The match that took place in the 32nd round of Europa League between Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen ended in a 1-0 Benfica’s victory. This means that, unfortunately, I lost the over 2.5 bet I placed.

In the 61st minute of the match, an opportunistic strike from Oscar Cardozo gave Benfica a vital away goal. The German side took the lead in the first 45 minutes of the game, and enjoyed the vast majority of ball possession. Unfortunately for them, it was their finishing which totally let them down.

I think Gonzalo Castro and Stefan Kiessling could have put their team ahead, but missed with a close-range header and curled shot from inside the box respectively.

The visitors took advantage of the wastefulness of Leverkusen and that was how they opened the scoring on the hour mark. Cardozo side-stepped Daniel Schwaab’s challenge before delightfully dinking the ball over the goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

In this match there were no red cards, only a few yellow cards: one received by midfielder Lars Bander from Bayer in the 52nd minute, another one received by striker Stefan Kießling in the 76th minute, one received by midfielder L. Melgarejo in the 45th minute and another one by Nemanja Matić in the 73rd minute.

All in all, I think these teams simply lacked the desire to play a spectacular match this time, since there was only one goal scored.

Result: -5 units, bet lost

  1. Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen haven’t met that many times, so placing a bet on over 2.5 was risky, even if their last matches ended with many goales scored. However, congrats for your courage!
