George Mikan

George Lawrence Mikan, also called Mr. Basketball made a name for himself back in 1948. Standing 2.03 m tall, Mikan was considered almost “too tall” for basketball for the time.

Yes, you heard that right, too tall for basketball. Mikan did not even had to move to be an effective player, he just stood there guarding the hoop, swatting away goal shots. This led the NCAA to make a rule against goal tending in 1945 because of him, while he was still in college.

And that’s not all, he was still so effective that some years later the NCAA had to widen the lanes from 6 feet to 12 feet, just so the other players could have some room to maneuver.

Tom Dempsey

For 43 years, kicker Tom Dempsey‘s 63-yard field goal was the longest in history until Matt Prater made a 64-yard field goal. That in itself is not problematic, even though some teams have questioned whether Dempsey gained an unfair advantage because of his special footwear.

Because he was born without the toes on his right foot, he wore a specially shaped shoe to play in. It was basically a half-shoe that came with a hardened, flattened surface to allow him to kick, but there was never any conclusive evidence to support the claim that this gave him a definite advantage.

However, the league introduced a rule stating that kickers who wear prosthetics are required to have the prosthetic shaped like a normal foot, even though Dempsey was accepted.

Shaquille O’Neal

Shaq is considered one of the most dominant centers of all time, and his strength has damaged many hoops during his long and successful career. The ferocity of his buzzes broke the boards, and on one occasion, he broke the supports that held the goal upright and also broke the hydraulics of another goal.

Because of this, there were very long delays, as the arena crew had to turn a goal back to weld things together in the middle of the game. This caused the goals to become stronger and the league adding a rule in the books that the opposing team would get free throws if it occurred one more time.

Now, there is a rule that states that any player who makes the ring unplayable or damages the table after making contact with it will be penalized and will be assessed as a technical foul of unsportsmanlike conduct.
