Chariot Racing
In Ancient Rome, chariot racing was one of the most popular sports of the period. They appeared well before Rome and were already taking place when the ancient Olympics were created in 680 B.C. But no one took this practice as seriously as the Romans did.
The competition had 12 chariots and 48 riders and when it started, one of the most striking features was the so-called “shipwreck”. The vehicles would fall and crash into each other on the track. As a consequence, they became obstacles for the competitors behind.
Jousting
Known by the name of jousts, these tournaments were fights fought with specially modified weapons to minimize injuries. The rider had to knock his opponent out with a lance blow in an arena without falling off his horse.
By the 14th century, tournaments became such sophisticated events that they included parties, balls, banquets, and other ceremonies. They were excellent occasions for young knights to meet beauties, daughters of the aristocracy, sealing alliances by marriage between powerful feudal families.
Board Track Racing
Board track was the popular US during the early 20th century. Racers would speed around circular wooden tracks, banked in a similar way to modern-day velodromes. The Motordromes were eventually modified to accommodate early automobiles. They were cheap to build but expensive to maintain, with the average track lasting only 3 years. The first board tracks were built in Los Angeles in 1909, and the crowds were soon flocking to watch the spectacle. Board track racing was an extremely dangerous sport, with motordromes being dubbed “murderdromes” by the newspapers.
