Strikers Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappé were honored at this week’s Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Bayern Munich player was voted ‘Crowd Player of the Year’ and the PSG Frenchman won ‘Player of the Year’. After the awards, they attended a press conference and answered a few questions. One topic they both touched upon was FIFA’s idea to hold the World Cup every two years – both players were concerned about this plan. “The World Cup is the World Cup. It’s a special thing because it’s something [held] every four years. If you put it on every two years, it can start to be normal to play the competition. I mean it’s not normal. It should be something amazing,” Mbappé explained “We play over 60 matches in a year. You have Europe, World Cup and now the Nations League – that’s a lot of competitions. We are happy to play, but when it’s too much, it’s too much. We have to recover, we have to relax,” he added.

Lewandowski reaffirmed Mbappé’s talk about the amount of games European clubs play per season, and added that a World Cup every two years would not let players reach their highest technical level. “We have so many games every year, so many difficult weeks, not only the games, but the preparation for the season, the preparation for the big tournaments. If you want to offer something special, something different, we also need a break,” the Pole said.

“If we have a World Cup every two years, the expectation is that the time when soccer players play at a high level will drop…. It’s physically and mentally impossible,” he concluded.
