The goalkeeper of the Norwegian beach handball team expressed her repudiation of the fine imposed on the team for wearing shorts in championships, a scandal that caught the attention of the singer Pink.

The team had decided to wear shorts to the European Beach Handball Championship, which cost them a fine of US$ 1,764 imposed by the European Handball Federation (EHF).

“It’s shocking that we have to pay not to play in a bikini,” goalkeeper Tonje Lerstad told the BBC.

The EHF claimed that the fine was imposed on the team for “inappropriate uniform”. Although the team was not surprised by the fine because it was informed that it would happen, the Norwegian goalkeeper called the punishment “unbelievable”.

“It’s stupid, we have to fight it,” she said.

In response to the measure, Pink said the EHF should be fined “for sexism”.

“I am very proud of the Norwegian beach handball team for opposing the sexist rules related to the uniform,” tweeted the artist.

Pink won’t have to pay the fine, because the Norwegian Handball Federation (NHF) has said they will pay for it.

“You don’t have to pay, but you can give us some tickets so we can meet at one of your shows in our shorts,” joked the goalie.

She also commented on the fact that many people volunteered to pay for the fine.

“Maybe we should open a bank account,” she joked.

The Norwegian federation has promised to continue supporting its athletes. “Together we will continue to try to get the dress code changed so that players can wear the uniform they feel most comfortable with.”

“We’ve received so much support from other teams that I can’t imagine any possibility other than a change (in the rules) next year,” said Lerstad.

The Norwegian team’s next sporting event will be the World Championships in the category.
