The world of sports is full of interesting stories, but sometimes we wonder, where did it all start?

It is difficult for historians to establish how, when, and where, exactly, men started playing sports; but it is worth a try, so here is a short history of sports in antiquity:

4.000 b.C.

The first records of physical activity without external motivation date back to ancient China. The modality was gymnastics.

1.450 b.C.

Displays of physical skill and strength were common during the rule of Pharaoh Amenhotep II. There was no competition yet and the main sports were swimming, javelin throwing, jumping, and wrestling. There are indications that outside the pharaoh’s sphere some ball games were also practiced.

776 b.C.

The first records of the games that took place in Olympia, Greece, every four years date from this year. At that time, wrestling, marathons, boxing, discus and javelin throwing, and chariot racing were practiced. During the games a truce was declared from wars and everyone could participate.

27 b.C.

Through the influence of Greek customs, some sports reach the Roman Empire, where they are celebrated and also transformed. The most famous of this period are the chariot race and the gladiators’ fight to the death.

12th to 16th Centuries

There are the so-called tournaments of the Aristocracy, in which knights and other nobles practice arts of war, usually in games on horseback.

17th century

It is said that most modern sports begin to take shape during this period. The principles of balance for sport begin to take shape – which will later become the gender, weight, and age divisions of each sporting category.

19th century

The old sports, both individual and team-based, gain form, rules, defined space, time, judges, and are differentiated from one another. Ball games gain strength and keeping the physical integrity of the participants becomes the key to the practice of sports.

1904

The First Olympics of the Modern World takes place in Athens, Greece. From then on, the specialization and professionalization of sports increased. Physical activities gain importance in social life as a means of human development and an important part of health.
