The history of world soccer is full of stories, but perhaps none is as tragic, shameful, and the result of raving fanaticism as the one we are going to tell today.
The story of Andrés Escobar’s last goal…
The Fateful Day…
On June 22, 1994, Andrés Escobar, a defender for the Colombian National Team, scored a goal against his own team in a World Cup match against the United States.
The goal contributed to Colombia’s 2-1 loss. This was a strong Colombian generation, who arrived rated as favorites, but did not make it past the first round.
Ten days later, Andrés Escobar was shot to death in front of a nightclub in Medellin…
Death of a Star…
The event only showed one more of the violent faces that Colombia was living in at that time. Taken over by drug trafficking, the country was living one of its darkest times, where violence was seen everywhere all the time.
On July 2, 1994, after returning to Colombia at the end of his World Cup journey, Andrés Escobar was the victim of insults coming from three men and a woman in a nightclub in Medellín, who complained about his own goal. Even though he asked for respect, El Caballero del Fútbol, as he was known, was murdered with shots to the head fired by Humberto Muñoz Castro.
The Outcome…
Muñoz Castro was a bodyguard and driver for brothers Pedro and Juan Santiago Gallón Henao, two drug traffickers and also suspects in the death of Andrés Escobar who insulted the player in the disco.
The perpetrator has never been able to prove the motivation for the murder, but it is assumed that the own goal scored by Andrés Escobar is one of the motives. Betting was very common at the time, and drug traffickers have always been active in this activity.
Humberto Muñoz Castro was sentenced to 43 years in prison but was released in 2015 for good behavior. The Gallón brothers, on the other hand, were sentenced to 15 months for covering up the murder. However, they posted bail of 1 million pesos and went free.
