Joe Harris, or Gypsy Joe Harris, came very close to becoming a professional boxing legend. He was so brilliant and intuitive, that he fought his entire career with one eye and suffered just one loss, against the legendary Emile Griffith. During a prefight physical in 1968, the doctors noticed an inflammation around one of his eyes and requested a more detailed checkup. It was then that Dr. Harold G. Scheie noticed Harris was blind in one eye and Gypsy Joe’s boxing license was revoked, ending his promising career.

Eugene Criqui

You must have heard before that someone has a glass chin, but there’s only one iron chin in history, Eugene Criqui. Criqui had tom interrupt his boxing career in 1915, when he was called to serve in the French army during World War I. One day, while on guard duty, a portion of his jaw was shattered by a German sniper’s bullet. Luckily, surgeons were able to reconstruct his jaw using wire and silver plates. He couldn’t even speak for several months.
His family and doctors were stunned when he told them he had decided to resume his boxing career. But he showed them and retired n 1928, having compiled a career record of 136 bouts with 105 wins, 16 losses, and 15 draws.
