“I am devastated and shocked to have no news of my partner Peng Shuai’s current location. I hope she is safe and will be found as soon as possible,” the former tennis number one wrote on her Twitter account. “This must be investigated and we must not remain silent,” Williams demanded.

In addition to Serena Williams, other big names in world tennis, such as Serbia’s Novak

Djokovic and Japan’s Naomi Osaka, among others, have publicly expressed their concern over Shuai’s situation.

In early November, Peng Shuai, once the leader of the women’s doubles rankings, accused on social media former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of three years ago of forcing her to have sex. In a post purportedly sent by Peng, she claims that the sexual abuse accusations were “not true” and that she is “resting at home and everything is fine.”

The ’email’ has not calmed the situation and has caused even more doubt by the language allegedly used by the Chinese tennis player and the fact that an edit cursor appears in the body of the text.

“I have tried on several occasions to contact her through different communication channels, but without success,” explained Simon, who asks that Peng Shuai “be allowed to express herself freely, without coercion or intimidation of any kind.”
